Research on Neural Systems of the Brain (MEPhI Bachelor's)
Original Bachelor’s thesis in Theoretical Nuclear Physics by Loran Jacobs, delivered as a private page in your member account with permanent access.
Academic Provenance: Original bachelor-level research work authored by Loran Jacobs (L.V. Akopyan) at the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute (MEPhI), Department of Theoretical Nuclear Physics, Moscow, 2005.
Core Scientific Value: A study of the general regularities of neural systems that model the physiological processes of the brain. Analytical methods are applied to simple coupled systems on the plane, and numerical methods to larger, more realistic networks. The work shows that a neuron in the Hodgkin–Huxley model near the Andronov–Hopf bifurcation reproduces the main properties of brain neurons, and identifies the inter-neuronal current as the main bifurcation parameter.
Key Research Areas:
• Bifurcation theory and dynamical systems in neurophysics, including measures of chaos and fractal dimension.
• Systems of two coupled oscillators: the Wilson–Callaway model and the Morris–Lecar synaptic model.
• Oscillatory neuron models, including FitzHugh–Nagumo, and self-oscillating systems analyzed with the Van der Pol method.
• Synchronization of coupled oscillators by the method of phase variables.
